The Taekwondo Grading System

The Taekwondo grading system is designed to guide students through a structured journey of physical skill, mental discipline, and knowledge. Starting at white belt, students progress through a series of coloured belts, each representing a deeper level of understanding and technical ability.

Regular Gradings

Gradings are held at regular intervals, offering students the opportunity to demonstrate their readiness for advancement. All students learn the art of Taekwondo, which includes:
-
Etiquette, respect, and the meaning of Taekwondo
Theory & Values

Theory is also introduced early, teaching students about:
-
The Tenets of Taekwondo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit
-
Korean terminology
-
The importance of discipline

Grading Requirements

At each grade, students must demonstrate both practical ability and theoretical understanding:
-
Patterns (poomsae) – set sequences of movements
-
Sparring – controlled combat application
-
Self-defence – realistic responses to attacks
-
Breaking – power and precision in striking boards

At Icon Academy, the grading journey is not just about achieving a higher belt—it’s about personal growth, technical excellence, and embodying the true spirit of Taekwondo.
